How Your Mattress Could Be Making You Sick And What To Do About It

Blog

Sleeping is an important regenerative process that allows your body to decompress after a long, hard day. Getting a good night's sleep can address many problems you face on a day-to-day basis, and it can make your overall mood much better. However, the keyword there is 'good' — for a bad night's sleep can be very harmful. If your mattress is on the older side of its lifespan (getting close to ten years old or more) then there is a very real chance that it could get you sick if you are not careful. Here is a brief explanation looking at why that is and what you can do about it.

Breeding Ground For Disease

When you sleep, your body is still constantly working, repairing damaged areas and generally looking after you. This leads to a variety of natural but still unhygienic processes such as the shedding of old skin cells and hair, as well as more simple things like sweating and drooling. While most of this stuff is caught by your pillowcase and bedsheets, over time enough of it will get through to your mattress itself and start to fester. Because you never wash a mattress, it eventually harbours enough of your bodily waste that it can start to make you ill if you are unlucky.

What Do I Do?

The simple answer is to buy new mattresses every time you start to notice a severe drop in the quality of your current one. When you do your next bedsheet laundry, make sure to look at the exposed mattress. If you notice a lot of yellowing and other signs of ageing, then it might be time to start mattress hunting. The longer you wait the more you risk exposing yourself. The last thing you want to do is to get sick simply from sleeping in your own bed.

Added Benefits

Getting sick isn't the only side effect of sleeping on an old mattress. From crushed springs to reduced padding, most older mattresses reach a point where they no longer provide adequate support and need to be replaced. New mattresses can help you get back to sleeping like a baby while posing no threat to your immune system. Mattresses are a key part of your overall health because of how often you interact with them. Risking your good health because you don't want to upgrade an old mattress just to save a couple hundred bucks is extremely problematic. Plus, newer mattresses are often way more comfortable anyway, making the upgrade even better. Ditch the mangy old mattress, and get one you actually look forward to sleeping on.

Redecorating my house at last

While I was still married my house was a mish mash of both of our tastes in furnishing. Now that we have seperated I am finally getting a chance to decorate my house the way I wanted it. I have a couch that is truly comfortable and looks good, rather than the smelly old couch that used to live in our lounge room. It's so much more relaxing to walk into my house and enjoy looking around. I'm reading furniture catelogues like I used to read novels and researching like crazy. Join me on my redecorating adventure by reading along!
